We made Made CBC Mainstreet’s top 10 Christmas album list! What’s on your Christmas playlist? There’s still plenty of time to purchase or download Let The Good News Ring, Christmas Songs From The Annapolis Valley. Just click on album cover ….

With the help of a couple of Christmas music aficionados, CBC Radio’s Mainstreet has compiled a list of the best Christmas music — and they’re inviting you to check it twice.

Singer-songwriter Meaghan Smith and Chronicle Herald arts reporter Stephen Cooke dropped by the show this week to talk about what’s new on the Christmas playlist — and to talk about songs and albums that are rightly Christmas classics.

Meaghan has had a hand in two such albums — A New Kind of Light and It Snowed.

Stephen owns several crates of seasonal vinyls, singles and CDs.

Here’s a list of the songs and records they recommend this holiday season, in no particular order:

Top Christmas Albums

  • Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings — It’s A Holiday Soul Party
  • Kylie Minogue — Kylie Christmas
  • Jann Arden — A Jann Arden Christmas
  • Vince Guaraldi Trio — A Charlie Brown Christmas
  • The Chieftains — Bells Of Dublin
  • Measha Brueggergosman — Christmas
  • Meaghan Smith — It Snowed
  • David Myles — It’s Christmas
  • Coig — Carols
  • Various — Let the Good News Ring (Annapolis Valley album

The Chronicle Herald’s  Arts Reporter Stephen Cooke adds Let the Good News Ring to “New Christmas albums for the heart and soul” wish list…..

“Here’s also an automatic coal-in-the-stocking ban for the Annapolis Valley elves behind Let the Good News Ring! (Ruby Throated Records), who were inspired to come up with 14 completely new songs to soothe the yuletide souls of those seeking respite from the umpteenth airing of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer or — shudder — Little Drummer Boy.

The Hupman Brothers Band forms the core of the record, with Valley songwriters making individual contributions, from the reverence of Cuckoo Moon’s Blessed Night and Donna Holmes’s The Christmas Story to irreverent wishes for a return to basics by Mike Aube (Jesus Christ, It’s Christmas Again) and Pete Adams (Christmas on Credit)

“[Cuckoo Moon] fill their music with the pulse and beauty of their Valley surroundings, set to a rhythm as soothing as the flow of the Fundy tide…. supple harmonies and imaginative arrangements.”
